In 1993 the first UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) took place and it changed the face of Martial Arts forever.

It’s purpose was to identify the most effective martial art in a real fight between competitors of different fighting disciplines.

The winner?

The smaller, 27 year old Brazilian Jiu Jitsu expert — Royce Gracie.

Beating bigger, stronger opponents the winner, shocked the crowd as he controlled and submitted every fighter he faced to win the first UFC and prove to the world that grappling and ground fighting are a modern day necessity in competition and for self-defence.

Over 20 years later Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is still a dominant force and must-have art for modern day fighters and anyone serious about practical self-defence.

Now, for the first time, you can try our Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Classes in Crawley and learn from a European Champion and Black Belt BJJ player — Keith McKenzie — in Crawley, West Sussex.

What is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?

Learn Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Techniques

Students ‘rolling’ and practise techniques

Putting leverage and technique before size and strength, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu allows a smaller person to overcome a bigger, stronger opponent using chokes and joint locks to make your opponent give up and “tap out”

During each and every class you’ll start with a through warm-up that focuses on improving flexibility, mobility and agility before learning new techniques and improving old ones.

Classes finish with ‘rolling’ a form of sparring where you are free to practise techniques and out-maneuver and ‘tap’ your partner.

Train for Fitness, Self-Defence or Join Our Competition Team

Our Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Classes in Crawley are part of the Checkmat Team based in Sao Paulo, Brazil, so our grades are recognised internationally and — if competition is your thing — you’ll be representing our club and the prestigious and respected Checkmat team.

But not everyone trains for competition.

If self-defence is a concern remember than over 90% of street-fights ending up on the ground, grappling and ground-fighting is one of the most neglected aspects of self-defence and a must have skill for anyone serious about looking after themselves.  For most martial artists out there, grappling is the missing link and one that Brazilian Jiu Jitsu fills.

Or maybe you want to get really fit, lose weight and just enjoy learning what is a seriously interesting pastime.

I wanted to thank Keith and all you nice people that have taught, offered advice, rolled and battered me since I started back in March. Its been hard work but fun and I couldn’t wish for a better bunch of people to hand my a**e to me twice weekly. I wanted to learn something new, lose some weight and get a bit fitter – two thirds there now so 2013’s goal is to get somewhere near competent.
