Beating Bullies…

By | bullying, Kids Martial Arts | No Comments

Beating the BulliesI’m 35 and bullying existed when I was a kid.

It still exists today and a trap adults and parents who saw bullying during our times at school is that we almost accept it like a phase you go through in life and will one day leave behind.

Unfortunately that doesn’t make life and school any more pleasant for our children.

They still have to face it, go through it, fear it and – in my humble opinion – suffer the negative consequences bullying can have on children that will carry through to their adult years.

So…

What do you do?

As a instructor at the gym, and teacher of martial arts – yep, the art of punching and kicking – the last thing I believe children should do is start fighting.

And I also don’t proclaim to have the solution to bullying – if it was that easy to solve it would have died out many years ago.

But what I do KNOW and have witnessed on multiple occasions is that CONFIDENCE and re-assurance that you’re an alright person is one of the best ways to tackling and beat bullying.

Kids who have confidence are harder prey to target.

Bullies like an easy target, someone who doesn’t stand up for themselves and someone who doesn’t have the confidence to say “Stop“, tell a teacher or just walk away.

And kids with confidence who believe in themselves and know that they are alright – by that I mean they like themselves, kids with confidence are kids who don’t hate themselves.

They’re kids who appreciate they were born perfect – that’s what I tell my daughter – because she was.

So sure, a bullied child might be upset but if they understand the bad things bullies say and do aren’t true and aren’t a true opinion of the bullied person – that’s a massive weapon in fighting back.  It means bullies just don’t and can’t have the same affect.

While there are lots of ways to build confidence and self-esteem – and yes, of course I’m biased but then I have seem so many kids benefit from this – is through martial arts.

I like martial arts for children because it’s about working as an individual and working as part of a team and I like martial arts for children because they build key physical characteristics — strength, co-ordination, agility, dexterity, balance and much, much more — and these physical characteristics make us feel good.

I like martial arts because (adults and) children feel like they can look after themselves.

And I like martial arts for kids because it’s exercise and we all feel better after exercise.

Even kids.

About Our Personal Training

By | Exercise and Fitness, Gym Crawley, Personal Training Crawley | No Comments

We come from a unique background and know that our personal training here in Crawley is one of the best ways to get cardiovascular fit and build a strong, lean body.

Our training is a great way to burn a lot of calories (and if you’re serious about losing weight and burning fat) creating a negative energy balance should be your main goal.  Simply put – you consume less calories than you burn and we can help you burn a lot of calories.

During our 1-2-1 training sessions our personal trainers will help you get warmed-up, put you through some mobility work to prepare your body.

Then the fun begins!

Since our background are the fighting arts (think Boxing and Muay Thai – similar to kickboxing) we use a variety of intense drills and pad work to get your heart rate up.

You’ll work through several rounds on the pads with your trainer – learning new techniques and combinations – before moving onto an exercise session where you’ll focus on building your strength, burn even more calories and get you in fighting shape without having to fight!

Our personal training sessions take place 7 days a week and our team of trainers are flexible with times and sessions at our gym in Manor Royal, Crawley.

While you can pay as you go and book single sessions – the magic happens when you commit to a block or 10 sessions because it ensures you train consistently and regularly.

And that really is the key.  Training consistently and regularly.

Plus our trainers will encourage and motivate you.  And are always on hand to offer advice on extra training you can do on your days off (remember weight loss is about creating a negative energy balance) and essential nutritional tips that make the difference.

To find out more about our personal training or (better still) to get started fill in the contact form on the side of this page.  You can call us on 01293 552 511 but we may be teaching (we’d rather be in the gym than manning the phones) so just leave a message and we’ll get back to you as soon as possible.

See you in the gym!

The first rule of our Kids Fight Club – it’s all about learning and control!

Last Sunday we had our first Kids Fight Club of the year, a chance for our youngest members to show case their skills in front of their parents and put them to the test in the ring against a fellow class mate.

The first Kids Fight Club of 2014

The first Kids Fight Club of 2014

The kids Fight Club is a sparring competition with no head contact, full protective equipment and designed to help our kids perform all their martial art techniques under a little extra pressure with a team in the corner, a referee and an audience made up of their parents and other gym members.

With a dedicated kids competition team (who travel the country to fight and have even traveled abroad) the Fight Club is a competition atmosphere but without any pressure.  It’s a simulated competition to get our members used to the environment.

Some will go onto compete and others just do it for fun which is (ultimately) what it’s all about.  Plus it’s a great way to help children grow in confidence amd help their self-esteem improve.

Enjoying your training and enjoying the opportunity to test out your techniques for real.

We run kids fight clubs throughout the year (and we run adult one too).

They’ve proven to be an effective method and stepping stone in helping our Muay Thai members move from training in the gym to fighting in the ring around the country.

And we’ve seen many of our youngest members grow up, move into our teen class and onto the adult Muay Thai class – join our Lumpini Fight Team and win World Titles around the world.

To find out more about our kids martial arts classes call us on 01293 552 511 or visit our gym in Manor Royal, Crawley!

Kids Fight Club – Sunday 23rd March

By | Competition Team, Kids Martial Arts, Martial Arts Clubs in Crawley, Teens Martial Arts | No Comments

Our kids fight club is a chance for our youngest members to show case their martial art skills and put them to the test in a friendly in-house sparring session.

Sparring – loved by our kids – is one of the most enjoyable parts of a lesson and in the kids fight club they spar safely and without head contact and get to show case their skills.

With a fully fledged adults and kids competition team – our fight clubs are the first step our members make before stepping into the competitive arena for the first time.  They are an excellent stepping stone for anyone who’d like to compete and good fun for those who don’t.

The next fight club is this Sunday the 23rd March and for our members only.

You can read more about our kids classes here (we have classes 6 days per week) call the gym on 01293 552 511.

Kid fight club and sparring competition

Last August Kids Fight Club, the perfect opportunity for our youngest members to show case their skill!

During a fight club each child has their own corner man and there is a referee in place to keep the action flowing.  The kids spar for 3 rounds back to back (as they would in competition) and have to demonstrate proper technique and the ability to listen to their corner man.

It’s all about perfect practise and preparation for the next generation of Lumpini Superstars!

Well Done Drai and Lily on their Jiu Jitsu Grading!

By | Uncategorized | No Comments

A massive well done done to Lily and Drai on their graduation from White to Grey/White belts in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

The grading syllabus is internationally recognised by the International Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Federation (IBJJF) the same organization that sanctions many of the top competitions around the world.

Which mean their grading will mean something at every Brazilian Jiu Jitsu club in the UK and abroad.

Kids Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Grading

The grading combined a demonstration of techniques with sparring against live opponents with the 11 year old students grading for a hour, as well as demonstrating plenty of maturity to their older class mates.

The next kids BJJ grading will take place in approximately 6 months.  An unusual martial art, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu places great pride on its grading structure.  Only adults are allowed to earn the coveted Black Belt which typically takes up to 10 years to earn.

The kids grading works through grey, yellow, orange and green belts before they move onto the adults grading syllabus as a Blue Belt.  Again, to preserve the quality of the art and the belt the youngest age for a Blue Belt holder is 16 years of age.

To find out more about our Kids BJJ classes Crawley call us on 01293 552 511 or you can read more about the ‘Gentle Art’ here.
